bentō café
Bentō Café in Rotterdam is a casual Japanese eatery where everyday meals are served in a space shaped by clarity and warmth. The design supports the restaurant's relaxed atmosphere, focusing on improving flow and comfort without overdesigning.
Our proposal removed physical obstacles to create smoother movement and better sightlines between the kitchen and the guests. This subtle intervention not only created 8 extra seats, but made the space more intimate, while allowing for more natural interaction.
To counter the coldness of the overly high ceiling, pendant lights were carefully placed on a lower level to bring a sense of scale and warmth. The lighting helps define a more human, grounded space and softens the overall atmosphere.
A palette of reused materials, muted colors, and modest detailing underlines the restaurant’s informal spirit. It’s a place designed for quiet routines, where care is present in the background, and where food and people remain the focus.
